Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action!

Team BOOM,

This week, I want to tell you about a friend of mine — Terry Murphy, known to all of us simply as Murph.

Whether you saw him a couple hours ago, a couple days, or a couple years, Murph’s greeting never changed: pure, authentic joy to be in your presence. No pretenses. No "busy" excuses. Just a genuine, all-in handshake, a big grin, and excitement that made you feel like the most important person in the room.

That's what I’ll remember most — and what I’ll carry forward.

Growing up, I always felt like my dad wanted me to be better than him in every way. It was never a competition — it was encouragement. And today, I feel the same about my three kids. I want them to be smarter, better problem-solvers, more charismatic, more athletic, more kind, healthier, better communicators… just better in every way.

Murph was one of the rare people outside my family who made me feel that same way.
He didn’t just celebrate the big milestones. He genuinely cared about the small victories too — cheering for every step forward like it mattered… because to him, it did.

That’s the kind of relationship that changes people.

That’s the kind of leadership that transforms culture and climate.

There’s no silver bullet. No magic pixie dust.
No secret strategy that will instantly change your organization’s culture.

Culture — what we do.
Climate — how people feel about what we do.

Both are built, day by day, in the tiniest interactions.
In 10 seconds or less — how you greet someone, how you make them feel seen, valued, and energized — that’s where culture is either built or broken.

"Culture isn't built in a handbook — it's built in a handshake."

It’s simple:
Pause.
Smile.
Show excitement.
Authentically listen.
Support people to perform at their best.
Celebrate their wins, no matter how small.

Be like Murph.
Greet people with genuine joy. Send them off with a smile, a fist bump, and a heartfelt,
"See you on the flip side."

Murph’s legacy will live on.
The lasting lesson he left me can live on in you, too — every time you choose to lead with joy, lift others up, and make this side a little better.

Rest easy, Murph. You made this side better. Now it’s our turn.

Onward,

Tom

06.11.25 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Team BOOM, A few years ago, I walked into a school that had just changed everything. New bell schedule. New leadership roles. New meeting calendar. The structure was completely reimagined… but nothing had changed. The same frustrations, same confusion, same results. Why? Because structure isn’t the same as a system. Structures are what we can see: the schedule, the calendar, the org chart.Systems are what people...

06.04.25 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Dear Reader, Back in March my wife Kelly and I found ourselves in that weird Midwest spring break limbo—too cold to open the pool, too early for patio furniture, but just warm enough to sit in lawn chairs and let the sun warm our bones. As we sat there, I looked over at the old “Quack Shack”—a weathered little fort we built when our kids were younger. It’s been years since they played on the slides or hung out...

05.28.25 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Dear Reader, Last week I entered a time machine. Seriously. I was driving 100 miles to a high school I’d never been to—my son was running in a sectional track meet, and I had one job: get there on time. But after stopping at a gas station halfway, I got back in the truck… and my phone said: SOS. Invalid SIM card. No signal. No GPS. No idea where I was. For a second, I panicked. Then I remembered what I used to do...
