A Time Machine Took Me Back to the 1900's

Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action!

Dear Reader,

Last week I entered a time machine.
Seriously.

I was driving 100 miles to a high school I’d never been to—my son was running in a sectional track meet, and I had one job: get there on time.
But after stopping at a gas station halfway, I got back in the truck… and my phone said:

SOS. Invalid SIM card.
No signal. No GPS. No idea where I was.

For a second, I panicked.
Then I remembered what I used to do back in 1996—
when I was 18, cruising around in my Mustang GT, and smartphones weren’t a thing.

You stop and ask for directions.

The first two people I asked looked at me like I was an alien.
(They probably never lived in the 1900s…)
But finally, the gas station manager stepped up, gave me directions to the right town, and gas station #2 got me to the meet on time.

Here’s what I was reminded of:
Phones are amazing.
But sometimes, a little patience and human connection still gets you exactly where you need to go.

Whether you're leading a school, a business, or a family this week—remember:
AI, Google, and that helpful colleague next door all have their place.

But the people around you?
They often know the context, the culture, and the human element better than any algorithm.

Ask. Listen. Trust the people in your building.

And if all else fails—
Stop at a gas station.

Onward,

—Tom

06.11.25 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Team BOOM, A few years ago, I walked into a school that had just changed everything. New bell schedule. New leadership roles. New meeting calendar. The structure was completely reimagined… but nothing had changed. The same frustrations, same confusion, same results. Why? Because structure isn’t the same as a system. Structures are what we can see: the schedule, the calendar, the org chart.Systems are what people...

Quack Shack

06.04.25 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Dear Reader, Back in March my wife Kelly and I found ourselves in that weird Midwest spring break limbo—too cold to open the pool, too early for patio furniture, but just warm enough to sit in lawn chairs and let the sun warm our bones. As we sat there, I looked over at the old “Quack Shack”—a weathered little fort we built when our kids were younger. It’s been years since they played on the slides or hung out...

This time of year, educators are sprinting toward summer break and business leaders are bracing for the summer push. The days feel long, the to-do lists feel longer, and we wake up, glance at our calendar, and mutter: “Just one more day.” But before this Friday fades into another blur, take a moment on your drive home. Play Larry Fleet’s song, Things I Take for...
