I saw this domino effect in action on September 25, 2021, at a cross country meet with 135 runners. My son Mason, then in 7th grade, trailed the lead runner with seconds to go. But in the final surge—on that last curve—I screamed louder than I ever have in my life.

If there was ever a moment to give it everything… this was it.​

And he did.
He passed him at the very last second.
He won.

It was electric. It was unforgettable. It was a domino tipping moment that changed everything.

Almost exactly one year later, life threw Mason a curveball.
On October 11, 2022, we were leaving Children’s Hospital just five weeks after he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

He turned to me and said:
​"I know it (diabetes) sucks, but it doesn't stop me from doing anything—so why should it matter?"

I nearly cried.

His mindset changed mine. And maybe it’ll change yours, too.
