Reader here is a reality reset,

Clint Eastwood once told Toby Keith the secret to longevity was simple: don’t let the old man in.

That short statement hit so hard it inspired Toby to write the song by the same name for the film The Mule.

Man, that’ll preach.

Because the “old man” is not just about age.
It’s the voice that lives in the past.
It’s the mindset that replays regret, rehearses fear, and drains today’s energy worrying about things we cannot control.

And that’s the trap.

In this game of life, we do not control the past.
We do not control every twist coming tomorrow.
We control this moment.

This conversation.
This choice.
This effort.
This attitude.

That’s why people who stay engaged, keep building, keep serving, keep learning, and keep moving forward seem to stay alive in a different way. They are not waiting around for life to happen to them. They are still in the arena. Still taking swings. Still saying yes to meaningful work, deep relationships, and memorable experiences.

I’ve seen it over and over. The people with the most joy are usually not the ones with the easiest lives. They’re the ones who refuse to surrender the present to bitterness, blame, or borrowed worry.

That’s the reminder for this week.

When your mind starts drifting backward into frustration or forward into fear, pull it back to the present.
Get up.
Go outside.
Call the friend.
Do the work.
Take the walk.
Start the project.
Speak the truth.
Say the prayer.
Have the conversation.

Stay focused on what is still in your hands.

Sometimes we all need a mantra.
Sometimes we all need a reality reset.
This one is mine for the week:

Never let the old man in.

woods at sunrise

04.01.2026 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Get this Reader, It was Saturday, March 28, 2026. At 4:15 that morning, the alarm went off. Outside, it was 32 degrees, pitch black, and quiet in that eerie, almost holy kind of way the world feels before sunrise. My two boys, my cousin Jay, and I stepped into the woods and started climbing a monster ridgeline in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest. By the time we reached the top, the first crack of sunlight...

03.25.2026 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Reader, When your supervisor or leader does not provide vision, direction, or support, it can feel like you are stranded on an island, forced to figure everything out on your own. Have you recently felt this way? Sometimes that feeling comes from poor communication. Other times, your leader may genuinely believe you do not need much support at all. Either way, the result can feel the same: isolation, frustration,...

work boots

03.18.2026 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Reader this lesson hit me hard, This morning, I watched my oldest son pull on his muddy work boots before heading out for another day on the job. He’s 20 now and finishing his first year as a union operator apprentice. As he got ready to leave, I patted him on the head and said, “I’m proud of the man you are.” That may not sound like much, but for me, it was a moment. I usually tell him "I am proud of the man you...
