Reader,

When your supervisor or leader does not provide vision, direction, or support, it can feel like you are stranded on an island, forced to figure everything out on your own. Have you recently felt this way?

Sometimes that feeling comes from poor communication. Other times, your leader may genuinely believe you do not need much support at all. Either way, the result can feel the same: isolation, frustration, and overwhelm.

Usually, I share strategies to help leaders elevate their leadership as we work toward becoming BOOMLeaders, people who consistently take action to improve themselves and their organizations.

But this week’s tip is for the person who does not see themselves as the leader.

It is for the person who thinks, “I’m just here to do my job. I’m not the one who makes the decisions.”

Here’s the spoiler alert: the most valuable and irreplaceable employees are often the ones who show up, give their best, and make decisions anyway.

So what should you do when you feel like you are on an island? When you are solving your own problems, getting little guidance from above, and carrying the weight of overwhelm?

I have felt that way more than once.

And let me tell you, that feeling will rob you of what little joy you have left in your work if you let it.

At some point, I knew I had to find a better way. I needed a mindset shift that moved me from frustration to focus, from feeling stuck to feeling strong. When I find myself in that space, I come back to three simple anchors:

  1. Live in the present. When fear fills your mind, you are usually focused on the future. When bitterness and frustration fill your mind, you are usually focused on the past. But the present is where your power lives. The present is where you can act. Recenter yourself there.
  2. Choose your attitude. In every situation, we have the power to choose our attitude. Yes, there are moments when we need to vent. There are times when frustration is justified. But we still get to choose our response. We still get to decide how we will carry ourselves through the storm.
  3. Focus only on what you can control. It is easy to complain about what is out of our hands. It is far more rewarding to pour our energy into the tasks, decisions, and moments where we can actually make a difference. Progress starts when your attention shifts from helplessness to ownership.

So the next time you feel frustrated, overwhelmed, unsupported, or lost at work, come back to one of these three mantras:

Live in the present. Choose your attitude. Focus on what you can control.

Those are not just nice sayings. They are lifelines.

They help reengage your mind.

They help steady your soul.

They help you step back into the work you have been called to do.

Because as BOOMLeaders, that is who we are!

04.01.2026 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Get this Reader, It was Saturday, March 28, 2026. At 4:15 that morning, the alarm went off. Outside, it was 32 degrees, pitch black, and quiet in that eerie, almost holy kind of way the world feels before sunrise. My two boys, my cousin Jay, and I stepped into the woods and started climbing a monster ridgeline in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest. By the time we reached the top, the first crack of sunlight...

03.18.2026 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Reader this lesson hit me hard, This morning, I watched my oldest son pull on his muddy work boots before heading out for another day on the job. He’s 20 now and finishing his first year as a union operator apprentice. As he got ready to leave, I patted him on the head and said, “I’m proud of the man you are.” That may not sound like much, but for me, it was a moment. I usually tell him "I am proud of the man you...

03.11.2026 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Reader here is a reality reset, Clint Eastwood once told Toby Keith the secret to longevity was simple: don’t let the old man in. That short statement hit so hard it inspired Toby to write the song by the same name for the film The Mule. Man, that’ll preach. Because the “old man” is not just about age. It’s the voice that lives in the past. It’s the mindset that replays regret, rehearses fear, and drains today’s...
