Reader,
Every January 1st, we hear it.
New year. New you!
We set resolutions, make big promises, and convince ourselves that THIS is going to be the year everything changes.
Then February rolls around, and most of those resolutions have already found their way into the junk drawer.
But why do we wait for January 1st, Monday morning, or the perfect moment to start improving ourselves?
What if we approached personal growth the same way Apple approaches the iPhone?
Think about it. Apple is constantly working on the next version. New features, bug fixes, better performance. Sometimes the updates are noticeable. Other times, you barely recognize a difference.
But the system keeps improving.
And that got me thinking.
I turned 48 in September, and I've decided my current operating system is Tom 4.8.
That's right. Version 4.8.
And while I'm currently running Tom 4.8, I'm already working on Tom 5.0, scheduled for release when I turn 50.
But here's the thing.
I'm not waiting two years to become a better version of myself.
I'm making updates right now.
Some are small bug fixes. Others are improvements to my physical health, finances, relationships, or mindset.
Heck, I haven't had a beard in years, but I'm growing one now. Will Tom 5.0 be sporting a full Viking beard or be back to clean-shaven? Who knows? Testing starts now!
Will I look dramatically different in 30 days? Probably not. Will my bank account double? NO.
Will I suddenly become a better husband, father, principal, or business owner?
Not overnight.
But every day, I'm making decisions that shape the next version of me.
And so are you.
We're either intentionally improving our operating system or allowing life to run on autopilot. And trust me, we all have a few bugs that need fixing!
Here's what I've realized. We don't need a complete overhaul to become better versions of ourselves. We need consistent updates.
Small improvements. Simple adjustments. Daily decisions.
They may seem insignificant today, but over time, they become transformational.
🔥 BOOM!
You don't become version 5.0 on your 50th birthday. You build it one update at a time.
BUILD THE SYSTEM
Instead of making massive resolutions that rarely stick, start thinking in weekly and monthly updates.
Maybe your next update includes:
Physical: Work out twice this week.
Financial: Save an extra $200 this month.
Personal: Drive your current vehicle another year instead of upgrading.
Relationships: Make time for one meaningful conversation with someone you love.
Nothing earth-shattering. No complete system overhaul.
Just small, intentional improvements that move you closer to the person you want to become.
And here's the beauty of it. You don't have to accomplish every goal perfectly. Some updates will work beautifully. Others may need a little troubleshooting.
The secret is to keep making progress.
Before you know it, those small improvements have created the version of yourself you once only imagined.
YOUR WIN
Before this week ends, identify ONE small upgrade you want to make to your current operating system. Write it down, set a deadline, and get to work.
Whether you're running version 1.9, 3.5, or 4.8, your next version is already in development.
Make it better than the last.
And speaking of upgrades, welcome to IGNITE 2.0!
