What 500 Students Hear From Me Every Week

Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action!

Friends,

Every week during our morning announcements, more than 500 students look to me for guidance, upcoming events, and the signal that it is time to start the day.

Before I finish, I remind them of one simple truth:

Show up and give your best.

That may be the closest thing we have to a secret for success.

First, show up physically. Be present in the place where you are called to be.

Students must be present to learn. When a child is absent, they lose access to the instruction, relationships, encouragement, and opportunities their school is prepared to provide.

But attendance is only the first step.

Second, once you arrive, give your best.

Not someone else’s best. Not perfection. Your best effort, attitude, and attention in that moment.

This matters for adults too. We all want to find fulfillment in the places where we invest our time. That fulfillment grows when we know we are contributing to something bigger than ourselves.

As leaders, we help create that kind of environment.

In a school, that may mean:

-Greeting students by name so they know they are noticed.

-Celebrating staff members who quietly make a difference.

-Creating routines that help everyone feel safe, supported, and ready.

-Following up when someone is absent so they know they were missed.

-Connecting daily work to the larger mission of serving students.

In an office, it may mean checking in before checking off tasks, recognizing progress, inviting ideas, and helping every team member see how their work contributes to the organization’s success.

People are more likely to show up when they feel known.

They are more likely to give their best when they feel needed.

That is where belonging builds commitment, and commitment creates momentum.

This belief is at the heart of my Attendance Lab, a year-long partnership designed to help districts reduce chronic absenteeism through better systems.

Participants receive access to the BOOM HQ Attendance Lab, a Mighty Networks-based leadership community that keeps the work active, connected, and collaborative throughout the year.

This is not a one-and-done professional development experience.

BOOM HQ gives attendance improvement a living home where leaders can access resources, templates, coaching takeaways, implementation reminders, and examples from other schools. Members can ask questions, share progress, celebrate wins, and solve common challenges alongside districts working toward the same goal.

Because attendance improvement should not live in one meeting, one folder, or one person’s inbox.

It should live in the daily systems of the school.

Students must be present to learn.

Our job is to create places where they want to show up and systems that help them succeed once they arrive.

Show up. Give your best. Help others do the same.

School leaders, hit reply and I will send you more information about partnering through Attendance Lab to increase student attendance this year.

Let’s build better systems, restore student access, and create repeatable wins.

P.S. August and September keynote dates are filling quickly as schools kick off a new year. If you'd like to ignite the BOOM within your school, district, or organization, hit reply and let's start the conversation.

Onward >>>,

Tom

Happy Teacher

07.29.2026 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! To all my friends in education, it is almost time. Ready or not, here they come. That is usually my response when someone asks how I feel about the beginning of another school year. Are you ready? Well... define ready. My wife is a teacher, and I am a principal, so our house lives at the intersection of teacher reality and administrator optimism. We laugh at the social media reels about surviving welcome-back...

Kettle Bell

07.22.2026 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Reader, I have fallen in love with kettlebells. They are always there, waiting. No setup, no excuses. You simply pick them up, move them around, and get an amazing workout. And every time I do, I am reminded of something simple. Strength comes from resistance. The weight pushes back. Your muscles struggle. You complete the rep anyway. Over time, your body adapts, and what once felt heavy becomes easier. Skip...

compass

06.17.2026 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Friends, I learned something this week that created a connection for me. The compass was invented nearly 1,500 years before the first mechanical clock. Think about that. For over a thousand years, people could answer the question, "Which way should we go?" long before they could answer, "How long will it take?" There's a lesson in that. Too often, we become obsessed with the clock. How long until I reach my goal?...
