Ready or not ...

To all my friends in education, it is almost time.

Ready or not, here they come.

That is usually my response when someone asks how I feel about the beginning of another school year.

Are you ready?

Well... define ready.

My wife is a teacher, and I am a principal, so our house lives at the intersection of teacher reality and administrator optimism. We laugh at the social media reels about surviving welcome-back meetings, eating salads again, finding your why, and opening that first email from your principal.

They are funny because they are painfully accurate.

The truth is, we are never completely ready. There will always be another classroom task, leadership decision, family email, or unfinished summer project.

But ready or not, the students are coming.

And that is a good thing.

Being off is wonderful. My wife and I are exceptionally talented at it. Give us a little free time, some sunshine, and nowhere we have to be, and we can turn relaxation into a competitive sport.

But there is also satisfaction in returning to work that matters.

We have chosen a profession built around people. Students, staff, families, coworkers, and communities are counting on us to help create places where people feel known, noticed, needed, and welcomed.

That does not happen through one motivational speech or a perfectly decorated bulletin board. It happens through small, repeatable relationship-building routines.

Here are three simple systems to help start the year right:

1. Start with names.

Choose a small group of students, staff members, or coworkers each day and intentionally learn something about them. Their name, an interest, a family connection, or what they are looking forward to this year.

People do not need us to know everything about them. They simply need evidence that we care enough to notice.

2. Create connection before correction.

Before the year gets busy, build a routine for positive communication. Send one encouraging message, make one positive phone call, or share one celebration each day.

Trust is like making deposits into a bank account. When challenges arrive, and they will, relationships give us something to draw from.

3. Communicate consistently.

Do not wait until there is a problem to connect with families or your community. Create a simple weekly rhythm to share what students are learning, what your team is celebrating, and what is coming next.

Clear communication builds confidence. Consistent communication builds trust.

The goal is not to begin the year perfectly.

The goal is to begin it intentionally.

So enjoy the remaining days of summer. Sit outside. Sleep in when you can. Eat the ice cream. Ignore your email for one more afternoon.

Then, when the doors open, step forward with purpose.

Set up simple systems. Create meaningful connections. Celebrate the people around you.

Because ready or not, here they come.

And together, we are going to make it a great year.

Kettle Bell

07.22.2026 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Reader, I have fallen in love with kettlebells. They are always there, waiting. No setup, no excuses. You simply pick them up, move them around, and get an amazing workout. And every time I do, I am reminded of something simple. Strength comes from resistance. The weight pushes back. Your muscles struggle. You complete the rep anyway. Over time, your body adapts, and what once felt heavy becomes easier. Skip...

happy woman

07.15.2026 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Friends, Every week during our morning announcements, more than 500 students look to me for guidance, upcoming events, and the signal that it is time to start the day. Before I finish, I remind them of one simple truth: Show up and give your best. That may be the closest thing we have to a secret for success. First, show up physically. Be present in the place where you are called to be. Students must be present to...

compass

06.17.2026 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Friends, I learned something this week that created a connection for me. The compass was invented nearly 1,500 years before the first mechanical clock. Think about that. For over a thousand years, people could answer the question, "Which way should we go?" long before they could answer, "How long will it take?" There's a lesson in that. Too often, we become obsessed with the clock. How long until I reach my goal?...
