Over-complication is Weak Leadership

Reader get ready,

Over complication is a sign of weak leadership.

I said what I said.

Let me paint the picture.

Years ago, I watched a district leadership team turn a simple problem into a full-blown “committee carnival.” We had charts. We had color-coded calendars. We had a shared folder with 47 documents and zero decisions.

And while we were “working,” the real work wasn’t getting better.

Students weren’t learning more.
Teachers weren’t less stressed.
Culture wasn’t improving.

We were just busy… building a beautiful bunker to hide from accountability.

That’s when it hit me.

Over-complication is often just fear in a fancy outfit.

Because leaders lead by deciding.

They stick to the basics.
They prioritize what matters most.
They move with clarity, not chaos.

Think about it:

As a school leader, your focus is learning.
As a business leader, your focus is revenue.
As a leader in a family, a church group, or a sports team, your focus is growth, accountability, and learning from mistakes.

That’s what leadership does.

Now let’s talk about the other side.

Managers who are afraid to decide do a few predictable things:

  • They delay.
  • They overcomplicate.
  • They point fingers.
  • They create meetings instead of momentum.

And while all that is happening, the organization pays the price.

Stagnation.

It’s like sitting at a green light because you’re waiting for more information about traffic three miles ahead. Meanwhile, everyone behind you is laying on the horn, and your opportunity is drifting away.

So here’s the BOOMLeader move:

Make the decision.

Don’t overcomplicate the details.
Don’t hide behind “one more meeting.”
Don’t wait for perfect information.

Decide with what you know now.

And if new information shows up later?

Own it. -- Share it. -- Adjust it.

That’s not weakness. That’s wisdom. That’s how winning is done.

Quick challenge for this week:
Where are you overcomplicating something that simply needs a decision?

Pick one.
Decide today.
Move forward tomorrow.

Believe it. Organize it. Own it. Multiply it. It's time to go BOOM!

Onward >>>

Tom

Picture this Reader, This past weekend, my wife Kelly headed to Chicago for a birthday party that deserves a spot in the hall of fame. Her high school friend Kim decided to celebrate in a big way. Over the years, Kim has lived in different cities, built friendships across the country, and created connection circles that stretched far beyond where it all began. For her birthday, she invited everyone back to Chicago...

04.15.2026 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Reader, As leaders, we are often like first responders rushing to the scene of an emergency. A problem erupts. Somebody needs help. Something is off track. Emotions are high. The pressure is on. So we do what leaders do. We triage the situation, take decisive action, and work to stabilize the moment. Then we hope future incidents can be prevented through awareness, training, and better habits. But this week, I...

04.08.2026 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Yo Reader, This past Monday, my family and I headed to St. Louis to make the most of a day off. As we drove toward my daughter’s favorite shopping area, we passed a gym called House of Pain. Now let me be fair. I know absolutely nothing about the business. It may be the best gym in the state. Maybe the trainers are tremendous, the equipment is elite, and the smoothies are life-changing. I’m only using the name as...
