Reader get this,

Attendance Is Access

Schools invest an incredible amount of time, energy, and money creating opportunities for kids.

Great teachers.

Strong curriculum.

Interventions.

Technology.

Athletics.

Clubs.

Counseling.

Career pathways.

Specialized supports.

We build all of it because we believe those opportunities can change the trajectory of a student’s life.

But there is one requirement that comes before every single one of them.

The student has to be there.

Students must be present to learn.

That sounds almost too simple.

But sometimes the simplest truths are the ones we overlook.

A student who misses school isn’t simply missing an assignment.

They’re missing the conversation that made the concept click.

They’re missing the teacher who noticed something wasn’t quite right.

They’re missing lunch with their friends.

They’re missing intervention.

They’re missing practice.

They’re missing encouragement.

They’re missing another opportunity to feel like they belong.

That’s why I’ve started thinking about attendance differently.

Attendance isn’t simply a number.

Attendance is access.

And access creates opportunity.

That shift in thinking has changed the way I approach chronic absenteeism as a school leader.

Instead of only asking:

How do we get kids to come to school?

I’ve started asking:

What systems can we build that make students want to return, help families reconnect, and ensure someone notices when a student begins to drift away?

Because chronic absenteeism isn’t solved by one assembly, one incentive, one phone call, or one attendance campaign.

It takes systems.

That idea is at the heart of something I’ve been building called the Attendance Lab.

The Attendance Lab is designed to help school leaders move beyond simply identifying an attendance problem and begin building practical, repeatable systems that restore students to school.

Not another binder for the shelf.

Not another one-and-done PD.

Ongoing support, practical tools, weekly coaching, and a community of educators working on the same problem together.

Because I’ve learned something after more than two decades working in schools:

PD creates a moment. Systems create momentum.

And when attendance improves, students gain access to everything we’ve worked so hard to provide.

That’s the opportunity.

That’s the work.

And over the next few weeks, I’m going to share more about what I’ve learned about restoring attendance, the students behind the numbers, and how schools can build systems that create lasting change.

If chronic absenteeism is on your radar this year, I’ve also created a short Attendance Lab Sneak Peek that gives you a look inside what I’m building.

10.07.2026 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Reader, Over the past few weeks, I’ve shared three simple ideas about attendance. Attendance is access. Students must be present before they can access the teachers, relationships, interventions, activities, and opportunities we work so hard to provide. Every percentage has a name. Behind every attendance number is a student like Max who needs to feel seen, connected, and part of something bigger than themselves....

09.23.2026 IGNITE Where Dr. Tom Webb sparks your curiosity and inspires action! Hey Reader, Last week I shared a simple idea: Attendance is access. Students have to be present before they can access the teachers, relationships, interventions, activities, and opportunities we work so hard to provide. But percentages can make this work feel clinical. So today, I want you to meet Max. Max was new to our school. He was introverted, quiet, and easy to miss. He wasn’t causing problems. He wasn’t...
